For women, even until fairly recent times, the only
ambition possible was to marry well and make the
most of one's marriage and marital position. We see
this ambition in Catherine the Great of Russia -- who
outstripped her husband through careful political
scheming -- and the opposite is true, that reliance
on "love" or even affection in a royal household
was fraught with mortal danger, at least in the
olden days.
And we see a similar undercurrent in the carreer
of the late Lady Diana, who aroused hatred and
resentment among at least some of "the Royals"
through being possibly a nicer person, and surely
more skilled at pleasing a crowd.
