We see this ambition in Catherine the Great of Russia -- who outstripped her husband through careful political scheming -- and the opposite is true, that reliance on "love" or even affection in a royal household was fraught with mortal danger, at least in the olden days. And we see a similar undercurrent in the carreer of the late Lady Diana, who aroused hatred and resentment among at least some of "the Royals" through being possibly a nicer person, and surely more skilled at pleasing a crowd.
